Exemptions in Tax Determination are now managed in CertManager
You can manage your exemptions entirely in CertManager. When you save a complete exemption, CertManager sends it to Tax Determination automatically.
You no longer need to make manual updates in Tax Determination to handle back-dated effective dates, Entity/Use Code changes, or removed exemption versions. You can save exemptions individually, through bulk upload, or by converting a certificate. Tax Determination updates right away.
Sovos is enabling these improvements for customers in waves and will email you before anything changes for your organization.
What's new
- Apply to tax calculations
-
Each exemption version now has an Apply to tax calculations checkbox. Select the checkbox to include the version in tax calculations. Clear the checkbox to exclude the version. You don't need to expire the exemption to exclude it from tax calculations.
- View exempt periods
-
See an exemption's date range across all versions as a single continuous view. The display updates in real time as you apply versions or change dates, so you always know what's being used for tax calculations.
- Change Entity/Use Codes in CertManager
-
You can now update a customer's Entity/Use Code without changing anything in Tax Determination. Expire the old exemptions or clear the Apply to tax calculations checkbox, then create a new exemption with the new code. For more information, read Update a customer's Entity/Use Code in CertManager.
- Back-dated effective dates
-
You can back-date effective dates and CertManager saves them to Tax Determination automatically. You no longer see a warning to update Tax Determination separately.
- Expiration date warning
-
When you add an expiration date to an exemption that has active historical versions with no expiration date, CertManager warns you that the date may not be enforced as expected. View the exemption's exempt periods to confirm the effective date range.
- Clearer error messages
-
Error messages are now more specific and include guidance on what to do next.
What to expect
- Back-dating an effective date
-
Works as expected. CertManager writes the date to Tax Determination automatically.
- Removing an exemption version from calculations
-
Clear the Apply to tax calculations checkbox. The version is excluded right away from tax calculations. No expiration date is required.
- Checking your effective date range
-
Use View exempt periods to see the full date range across all versions in one place. You no longer need to open each version and calculate dates manually.
- Changing a customer's Entity/Use Code
-
Expire the old exemptions in CertManager and create a new one with the new code. No separate step in Tax Determination is required.
- Getting an error
-
The most common error, an Entity/Use Code mismatch, includes a message explaining what to do. Any other error prompts you to try again or contact support.
