Transmit to the IRS
Learn how to transmit your forms to the IRS.
After adding your data and printing your forms, the last step in your tax reporting process is to transmit your forms to the IRS.
- Go to Transmit > IRIS Transmit on the side menu.
- Click Create Transmittal.
- In the Federal forms section, select one of the following options:
- Originals: Forms that have not needed to be corrected.
- Corrections: Forms that were previously transmitted and accepted by the IRS but need to be corrected.
- Replacements: Forms that were previously transmitted but were rejected by the IRS and need to be replaced.
- Select a filing type from the dropdown and filter by receipt ID, if needed.
The dropdown options depend on which filing type you selected on the previous screen. The receipt ID is provided by the IRS.
Note:For corrections and replacements, filter by receipt ID to only include records from a specific previously transmitted file.
- Originals:
- New original
- Records being sent for the first time.
- Previously rejected originals
- Originals from a file that was rejected by the IRS before getting a receipt ID.
- Corrections:
- Accepted
- Records that were accepted and then corrected and are ready to be sent.
- Accepted with errors
- Records that were accepted with errors, then corrected, and are ready to be sent.
- Partially rejected
- One or more payers in the file were rejected, then corrected, and are ready to be sent.
- Fully rejected
- Corrections from a file that was rejected by the IRS before receiving a receipt ID.
- Replacements:
- Partially rejected
- Only some payers in the file were rejected by the IRS.
- Fully rejected
- All payers in the file were rejected by the IRS.
- Originals:
- Select which forms to transmit.
- Payers and forms
- All payers and forms are selected by default. If you don't want to include a payer or form, click the Arrow icon and clear the checkbox.
- Include forms under federal limit
- The IRS has a limit for what must be reported. Select this checkbox to include all forms and ignore those limits.
- Include forms with errors
- We recommend fixing errors in your data before transmitting. If you want to ignore errors in your data and transmit the forms anyway, select this checkbox.CAUTION: If selected, forms with errors and forms whose recipient has errors will be transmitted.
- Combine federal and state
- Select this checkbox to transmit to both the IRS and states that participate in the Combined Federal/State Filing (CF/SF) program.Note:
If you have the state reporting add-on service, this option isn't available for 1099-NEC forms.
- Click the Arrow icon next to a form type to expand the section and review your control totals.Control totals typically include the sum of all payment amounts and withholding amounts and the total number of forms being transmitted. These amounts are based on the criteria you selected in the Data selection section.Tip: If the Refresh control totals button is enabled, the displayed control totals are outdated. Click this button to get the most recent control totals.
- If the control totals look accurate, click Create transmittal file.
- Review the transmit settings you selected in step 4 and review your control totals again.Note: If you see a loading circle instead of a list of form types, your transmittal file is not ready yet. The transmittal file will be ready in a few moments.
- If the control totals look accurate, click Approve and transmit.
If you need to start over, click Cancel transmittal, then click Cancel transmittal again on the pop-up. The forms will be marked as cancelled and you can start the transmit process again.
If you want to transmit later, click Go back. The transmittal file will be saved in the Approve and transmit section of the Transmit page.
- On the pop-up, click Transmit to IRS.
