  • You do not need to register combos or variety packs in South Dakota.

License information

If you have a wholesale license in South Dakota, you can use it to register new direct products. Registrations for wholesale products are also valid for direct shipping, but first you must be licensed to ship both direct and wholesale to the state.

If you do not already have a Wholesale license number in South Dakota, use your Direct license number or your Federal Basic Permit Number. South Dakota Direct Shippers licenses begin with TA- or DS-. When entering the license number, exclude the letters and enter the numerical digits only.

The state will issue a Brand Registration (BR) permit number via email, which will be required to register a label in the state. You should use only the four digits of your BR number on registration submissions. Wholesale and Direct BR permits are interchangeable.

Distributor information

Distributor information is not required as part of label registration in South Dakota.

Required documents

  • Distributor Appointment Letter
  • Trade Name Document (if you answered yes to Does this brand operate a trade name owned by you?)
  • Bottling Letter (if you answered no to Do you bottle this brand?)
  • Brand Owner Authorization Letter (if you answered no to Are you the brand producer?)
  • Brand Acquisition Letter (if you answered yes to Are you registering a label because you just recently acquired this brand?)

Renewals

Renewals take place during an annual renewal period that runs from November 1 - December 31. Registrations are valid for a calendar year, and must be renewed on or before December 31.

More information

Incorrect fees for wine registrations: If you are registering a wine line extension and therefore should pay $17.50, but you are charged $25, check how the brand is listed with the TTB. If the brand is misspelled or incorrectly listed, PRO can't recognize it as an existing brand. Reach out to the TTB to update the brand information.
