How can we help?

About SCI Tools

SCI Tools is a self-service portal where you can explore SCI field mappings, compare countries, transform and validate XML documents, and get AI-powered answers for over 37 countries.

SCI (Sovos Canonical Invoice) is a standardized format designed to simplify global electronic invoicing and reporting. The SCI Tools portal (sci-tools.sovos.com) gives you direct access to SCI field mappings, country comparisons, XML transformation and validation, and an AI assistant, all in one place. Sovos employees and partners can all use this new portal to access SCI information quickly.

What SCI Tools replaces

SCI Tools replaces the SCI Modular Approach spreadsheet, which is no longer maintained. The spreadsheet was a static file that had to be requested from a Sovos representative and was hard to search or keep current. SCI Tools is live, searchable, and interactive, so you can find the information you need without waiting for a Sovos contact.

Available modules

SCI Tools includes six modules:

Fields Mapping

Browse and search SCI fields by country, document type, and version. Each field includes its definition, data type, local legal path, condition (mandatory or optional), and compliance context. You can filter results, customize visible columns, and export the data.

Data Comparison

Compare SCI fields across different countries, document types, and versions side by side. Results are grouped into collapsible blocks so you can identify regional variations in conditions, data types, and local requirements.

XML Tools

Transform, convert, and validate XML documents using country-specific XSLT stylesheets and XSD schemas. XML Tools includes four sub-modules:

  • XML Processor — Transform XML between SCI and legal formats and validate the output.

  • Conversion — Convert JSON or IDOC files to XML.

  • Validation — Validate any legal or SCI XML document against its XSD schema.

  • Samples — Download legal and SCI XML samples for any supported country and document type.

SCI Tree View

Browse the hierarchical SCI structure organized by blocks and paths. Expand any block to see its SCI paths and corresponding local legal mappings, which is useful for understanding field relationships within a document type.

Indirect Tax API Integration

Upload and send documents through the Indirect Tax API Documents endpoints using base64-encoded payloads and validate structured API responses. Query the Indirect Tax API Notifications endpoints by document ID or customer tax ID to retrieve document status and response details.

Sovi AI

Ask questions and get instant answers from the Sovos AI assistant. Sovi AI can help you find supported countries, field mappings, compliance requirements, and differences between SCI and legal formats without leaving the portal.

How to get access

A Sovos user must invite you to SCI Tools. You'll receive an email inviting you to create a Sovos profile. After you've set up your Sovos account, log in to SCI Tools at sci-tools.sovos.com. You will also need to configure two-factor authentication during the initial setup.

If you didn't receive an email, make sure that your IT team removes any restrictions on emails from noreply@sovos.com.
