AutoFile authentication codes

Learn about authentication codes and how AutoFile handles them.

With information security a top priority, many state and local taxing agencies have adopted authentication code systems as a precautionary measure to prevent fraudulent online activities, and to protect taxpayers' online accounts.

Authentication codes are a heightened security measure implemented by states to prevent unauthorized access to accounts. When attempting to log into your account, the site will automatically send an authentication code to a pre-designated phone number or email address.

Reducing the number of authentication codes sent to you

There are a few ways the AutoFile team works with you to reduce the number of emails to your inbox.

Some state sites will allow two destinations for the authentication code (for example, a cell phone as well as an email address). In this case, your company and Sovos can both be an authorized user. The AutoFile team can alter the destination of the authentication code to Sovos' email address when possible. They will only add the Sovos email or phone number with your explicit permission.

After an AutoFile team member is authenticated, most (but not all) state sites will recognize the filer's browser for future filings.

Sending your authentication code to the AutoFile team

When an AutoFile team member logs in to your state account to file your returns, they may need to verify your or your company's identity. Because the security information is based on your information, you will need to work with the AutoFile team to give them access to your state account.

If you receive an authentication code, send it to the AutoFile team right away. Email SAF@Sovos.com or text 781-715-5231.
CAUTION:

Many of the states' authentication codes expire 10 minutes after they are sent. To reduce the number of times the code needs to be sent, it is best to forward the code quickly.

When possible, enter Sovos' email (SAF@Sovos.com), and your cell phone as authorized account users. If you prefer to keep your email address on the account, the AutoFile team will request authentication codes each time one is needed.
