Error: Access code could not be generated

If you see an error message saying Error: Access code could not be generated when you try to file a Great Britain return directly, it's likely that your Making Tax Digital (MTD) token has expired.

This token is a security credential that allows software developers to view tax information through the HMRC API. As it expires every 18 months, you need to refresh the MTD token to continue viewing data.

  1. Go to Settings > Companies
  2. Select the company you're filing for. Then, on the Company Details page, select the country of registration.
  3. Select Refresh MTD token.
    You can now file again. You'll be prompted to enter your HMRC username and password.
