Standard Audit File for Tax (SAF-T) is an international standard developed by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2005. It creates a standardized format for electronic exchange of accounting data between businesses and tax authorities or external auditors.

SAF-T provides tax authorities with reliable accounting data in a consistent, readable, and easily verifiable XML-based format. This standardization is transforming tax reporting across Europe as more countries adopt requirements for businesses to submit their financial data electronically.

In May 2005, the OECD Committee on Fiscal Affairs (CFA) published the first version of the SAF-T guidance. Version 1.0 was based on entries found in a General Ledger Chart of Accounts, along with master file data for customers and suppliers, plus details of invoices, orders, payments, and adjustments.

The standard has evolved over time with Version 2.0 extending the standard to include information on Inventory and Fixed Assets, enhancing the original specification based on feedback from OECD member countries.

While SAF-T is not specific to Value Added Tax (VAT) accounting, it's increasingly used for VAT reporting by tax administrations in the EU and elsewhere, providing detailed VAT-related data to tax authorities in a standardized format, including information on sales, purchases, VAT rates, and other relevant compliance data.
